Kevin has over 35 years experience working with and managing woodlands.
He spent 25 years of his career with the Forestry Commission in roles such as Forest District Manager, Operations Manager (for 11 years), Planning Forester, Technical Trainer, and Forester. Kevin Penfold (MICFor.)
Member of the Institute of Chartered Foresters A chartered forester for over 30 years Kevin qualified with distinction from Cumbria College of agriculture and forestry in 1987.
He has extensive experience in managing woodlands in both the public and private sector. Following a varied 25 year career managing woodlands for the Forestry Commission that took him from an area forester in Shropshire to District Manager for Southern England Kevin left to start his own business in 2012.
Since then he has managed and assisted private clients, accessing grants, preparing and delivering woodland plans as well as creating new and regenerating woodlands.
He also has extensive experience in the management of heathland and ancient woodland, along with stream and wetland restoration, including the delivery of some of the largest EU and UK grant aided environmental stewardship and restoration schemes in England.
A past approved forestry technical trainer, assessor, and examiner, he has a high level of technical competence having represented forest industry interests at a national level with the HSE.
James joined Penfold’s in 2017 to focus on building a resource to deliver an increasing programme of tree establishment and Forest maintenance works. Having qualified in golf course management in 2008 he moved on to start a landscaping business in Australia before returning home to the UK with his new family.
Since then James has developed extensive experience in the practical delivery of woodland establishment operations from ground preparation and fencing through to planting and aftercare. Managing a team of staff planting some 1/4 million trees per year he has a clear focus on securing quality woodlands for the future.
James has also developed a sound practical knowledge in the application of forest mensuration and survey’s managing a team that delivers over 6000 survey plots per annum across the country to provide information to aid forest planning and production forecasting for future harvesting
